Zendesk vs Freshdesk, and what each AI agent costs you
Zendesk and Freshdesk are helpdesks priced per agent, and both put an AI agent on every paid plan. They bill it in opposite ways. Zendesk charges for each resolution past a small allowance and keeps answering unless you stop it. Freshdesk sells sessions, gives each account 500 once, and goes quiet when they run out unless you switch on auto-recharge. Here are both price lists, what the AI costs on each and how far their free options go. The third column is Deacon, an AI customer support agent for founders who answer support themselves. It has a free plan, and it needs no card.

How Zendesk and Freshdesk charge for the AI
Zendesk bills each resolution, and keeps answering past the allowance
Zendesk’s AI agents come with every plan, billed by the automated resolution, a request the AI settles without passing it to a person. The pricing page includes 5 resolutions an agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Growth and Suite Professional and 15 on Suite Enterprise, up to 10,000 a year. The help centre describes newer resolution tiers, where the allowance is held as money, $2, $5 or $10 an agent a month by plan, up to $5,000 a year, and a language model reads each finished conversation so that only a verified resolution counts. Past the allowance, a resolution costs $2.00 pay as you go, or $1.50 bought in advance. Overage is on by default and billed monthly. Switch it off, and the AI agent pauses and sends customers to your team.
Freshdesk sells sessions, and stops when they’re gone
Freddy AI Agent comes with Growth, Pro and Enterprise, with 500 free sessions to try it. That’s once per account, not once a month, and after them, sessions cost $49 per 100. A session is each customer’s interaction with the AI, not each resolution. On email it’s a 72-hour window from the customer’s first email, and on chat it’s 24 hours, however many replies the AI sends. Previewing an AI agent while you build it uses sessions too. When they run out, the AI stops answering and chats go to your agents, and in the self-service widget it simply stops, with no handover. Auto-recharge, which you switch on yourself, buys a pack of 100 whenever fewer than 50 are left.
The figures in these cards are from zendesk.com/pricing, Zendesk’s help centre, Freshdesk’s pricing page and Freshdesk’s guide to its AI agents, read on 23 September 2026. Zendesk AI pricing works through a month of Zendesk’s AI for one or two agents, and AI help desks sets out how more helpdesks bill theirs.
Underneath sit the seats. Zendesk’s Support Team is $19 an agent a month billed yearly, or $25 monthly, and Freshdesk’s Growth is $19 billed yearly, or $23 monthly. Neither puts AI in a chat on your website, though. On Zendesk, messaging and live chat start on Suite Team, at $55 an agent a month billed yearly, or $69 monthly. On Freshdesk, the AI answers email, and the chat AI agent needs Freshdesk Omni, from $29 an agent a month billed yearly, or $35 monthly.
Here’s how that plays out for one person whose AI takes 300 chats a month, by our arithmetic. On Freshdesk Omni, that’s 300 sessions, so the free 500 run out during the second month, and after that it’s three packs a month, or $147, on top of the seat. On Zendesk’s Suite Team, only resolved chats are billed. If the AI settles 200 of the 300, the allowance covers a handful and the rest cost $2.00 each, close to $400 a month on top of the seat. Zendesk bills for what the AI settles, and Freshdesk bills for every chat it joins.
Either way, the AI is a second bill that grows with your volume, on top of a helpdesk built for a team. A support team weighs that against an agent’s time. A founder who answers support alone ends up paying for the helpdesk first, just to get the AI.

Zendesk’s prices come from zendesk.com/pricing and Freshdesk’s from its Freshdesk and Freshdesk Omni pricing pages, all read on 23 September 2026. Both vendors show a UK visitor prices in pounds, so the dollar figures here come from the price data inside each page. The help pages behind the other rows are listed at the end.
Choosing between Zendesk and Freshdesk
Pick Zendesk if your support already runs as a team across many channels. Suite Team brings messaging, live chat, social channels and voice into one workspace, and Suite Professional adds IVR phone menus, callbacks and skills-based routing. Its marketplace lists more than 1,800 apps. You decide whether the AI agent keeps answering past its allowance or hands the work to your team. And an early-stage company can apply to Zendesk for Startups, which its pricing page describes as a 6-month trial of the Suite for up to 50 agents.
Pick Freshdesk if you want lower seat prices and a hard stop on AI spend. An email-first team can start on Freshdesk’s Growth, and Omni brings chat and messaging for $29 an agent a month billed yearly, about half of Zendesk’s Suite Team. The AI stops when its sessions run out, so the bill can’t run on unless you switch on auto-recharge, and a day pass lets an occasional helper in for $2 on Growth. Two agents can use the Free Program for six months, though it comes with no free AI sessions.
Both assume a team working through a queue, and both sell the AI as a meter on top of it. If you’re a founder answering support between everything else, you may not need a helpdesk at all, and there’s a third option.
Where Deacon fits when support is just you
When you handle support yourself, most of your day goes on the same few questions, asked again. Deacon answers them on your site in seconds, 24/7, from your own docs and in the customer’s language, with no flows to build. When your docs don’t cover something, it says it doesn’t know rather than make an answer up, and asks for the visitor’s email. You’re emailed when they leave one or ask for a person, and your reply from Deacon’s dashboard lands in their chat if it’s still open. There’s no inbox or queue to staff.
Each answer you write makes Deacon better. A question your docs missed gets an Answer this button, and what you write becomes part of what Deacon knows, so it can answer the next person who asks. Save & check asks Deacon the question again, shows you the reply it now gives and tells you how many other open questions your answer covers. The more you answer, the less Deacon needs you.
You also get the customer insights a helpdesk sells on its higher plans. Every conversation is saved and searchable by what visitors asked. Topics group the questions about your product, count the people behind each one and label most of them, for example as a bug report, a feature ask or a how-to, so you can see what to fix and what to build next. That’s on every plan, free included, while Freshdesk keeps Freddy AI Insights for Enterprise and Zendesk’s intelligent triage starts on Suite Professional. The script behind the widget also runs your website analytics, with visitors, sources, goals and funnels.
And the AI is the plan, not a meter on top of one. Deacon counts its own replies as answers, and you can test it in the Playground as often as you like, because chats there never count. When a month’s answers run out, nothing more is billed. Visitors get a short reply saying Deacon can’t look into that one right now and are asked for their email, unless they’ve already left it, so nobody hits a dead end. Every feature is on every plan, no plan upgrades itself, and none shows a “powered by” line. The free plan needs no card, has no end date and deletes nothing for inactivity.
