Tidio vs Zendesk, paying per conversation or per agent

Tidio is a live chat inbox with a free plan for up to 10 people. It bills for the conversations your team answers and sells its AI agent, Lyro, in monthly packages. Zendesk is a helpdesk that charges for every agent and puts an AI agent on every plan, billed by the resolution past an allowance. Here’s what each costs, how each counts and caps its AI, and which kind of team each one suits. The third column is Deacon, an AI customer support agent for founders who answer support themselves. It has a free plan, and it needs no card.

What Tidio and Zendesk charge for

Tidio bills for the conversations your team answers

A billable conversation is one someone on your team replies in, counted once however long it runs. Messages nobody answers don’t count, and nor do replies from Lyro. Free covers 50 a month, Starter 100 and Growth from 250 to 2,000, and every self-serve plan has room for 10 seats at no charge. Lyro has a meter of its own. It counts every conversation it replies in, and it’s sold in monthly packages from 50 conversations to 1,000.

Zendesk bills for agents, then for resolutions

Every agent needs a paid seat, and chat on your site starts on Suite Team. AI agents come with every plan and are billed by the automated resolution, a request settled with no person stepping in. An allowance is included, which the pricing page counts in resolutions and the help centre in dollars. Past it, each resolution is $2.00, or $1.50 if you commit in advance, and the AI agent keeps answering unless you switch overage off.

The figures in these cards are from tidio.com/pricing, zendesk.com/pricing and Zendesk’s help centre, read on 23 September 2026. Zendesk AI pricing works through a month of Zendesk’s AI for one or two agents.

So the two bills grow with different things. Say three of you share the chat on your site. On Tidio, once you answer more than the free plan’s 50 conversations a month, that’s Starter, at $29 a month or $24.17 billed yearly, whether one of you replies or all three, because seats are free. On Zendesk, it’s three seats on Suite Team, at $69 an agent a month or $55 billed yearly, which comes to $207 a month, or $165 billed yearly, by our arithmetic, before the AI settles anything.

Tidio’s bill moves with volume instead. Starter covers 100 conversations a month between the three of you, and Growth starts at $59 a month for 250. Lyro comes on top, from $39 a month for 50 conversations. Zendesk doesn’t price by the conversation at all. It prices by the agent, and its AI agent answers on an allowance first, then at $2.00 a resolution, unless you set it to pause.

Tidio, Zendesk and Deacon, row by row

Free plan

Tidio
Yes, with no end date. Up to 10 seats and 50 billable conversations a month, with live chat, ticketing, email, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. Lyro’s 50 free conversations come once, for the life of the account
Zendesk
None. A 14-day trial of Suite Professional with no card, and a startup programme for new customers who qualify
Deacon
50 answers every month on one seat, with every feature and no card. It has no end date and deletes nothing for inactivity

Cheapest paid plan with chat on your site

Tidio
Starter, $29 a month, or $24.17 a month billed yearly, for 100 billable conversations
Zendesk
Suite Team, $69 an agent a month, or $55 billed yearly. Support Team, at $25 or $19, covers email and ticketing
Deacon

Seats

Tidio
Free, up to 10 on every self-serve plan
Zendesk
A paid seat for every agent, on every plan
Deacon
one seat on Free and three seats on Starter, included in the price

The AI agent

Tidio
Lyro, bought beside any plan or on its own, from $39 a month, or $32.50 a month billed yearly, for 50 Lyro conversations
Zendesk
AI agents on every plan, with an allowance included, then $2.00 a resolution pay as you go, or $1.50 bought in advance
Deacon
Deacon itself, on every plan. Its answers are what the plan sells

What the AI is counted by

Tidio
Any conversation Lyro replies in at least once, solved or not. A conversation Lyro hands over straight away isn’t taken from the quota
Zendesk
A request the AI agent settled without passing it to a person. On the newer tiers, a language model reads each conversation and only a verified resolution uses the allowance
Deacon
Each reply Deacon writes on your live site. Chats in the Playground and on localhost never count

AI included in the price

Tidio
50 Lyro conversations, once. Plus and Premium include Lyro from 300 and from 3,000 conversations
Zendesk
The pricing page says 5, 10 or 15 resolutions an agent a month by plan, up to 10,000 a year. The help centre says $2, $5 or $10 an agent a month, up to $5,000 a year
Deacon
50 answers a month on Free and 1,000 on Starter, with the same model on every plan

When you run out

Tidio
At the monthly conversation limit, your team can’t reply to new messages or see their details until the quota resets. A spent free Lyro quota never resets
Zendesk
By default the AI agent keeps answering and each extra resolution is billed. Switch overage off and it pauses, and requests go to your agents
Deacon
Visitors get a short reply saying Deacon can’t look into that one right now, and are asked for their email unless they’ve already left it in that conversation. You can still read and answer every conversation

Bills that rise on their own

Tidio
On a new project billed monthly below Plus, a package moves up a level at 95% of its quota unless you switch that off
Zendesk
Overage is on unless you switch it off, and it’s billed monthly whatever your subscription terms
Deacon
Never. No plan bills past its answers, and none upgrades itself

Removing their branding

Tidio
Not on Free or Starter. A $20 a month add-on on Growth, or $16.67 a month billed yearly, and included on Plus
Zendesk
From the messaging widget, only on Suite Enterprise, which is sold through sales
Deacon
No plan shows a “powered by” line, so there’s no badge to pay to remove

Handing over to a person

Tidio
By default Lyro passes the chat to your inbox. During your hours it offers Talk to a person, and it can create a ticket instead
Zendesk
The AI agent escalates to your agents, and a request a person had to finish isn’t billed as a resolution
Deacon
It says when it doesn’t know and asks for the visitor’s email. You’re emailed when they leave it or ask for a person, and your reply appears in their chat while it’s open

Seeing what customers ask

Tidio
Basic analytics on every plan and advanced analytics from Growth. AI insights are listed with Premium, which is priced through sales
Zendesk
Prebuilt dashboards on every plan. Intelligent triage, which classifies every ticket by what the customer needs, starts on Suite Professional
Deacon
Every conversation, searchable by what visitors asked, and Topics that group questions, count who asked and label most of them, on every plan

What the AI learns from

Tidio
Website pages, up to 60 on a priority scan, Q&A pairs, CSV or PDF files, articles imported from a Zendesk help centre, and Shopify or WooCommerce products
Zendesk
Your Zendesk help centre, plus outside content brought in by a web crawler or a knowledge connector
Deacon
A crawl of your website or single pages, files (PDF, Word, Markdown, text, CSV or HTML), pasted text and the answers you write

Channels

Tidio
Live chat, email, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram, on every plan, Free included
Zendesk
Email and a web widget on every plan. Messaging, live chat, social channels and voice from Suite Team, and phone menus and callbacks from Suite Professional
Deacon
The chat widget on your own website

Actions in other systems

Tidio
From Growth, your team can cancel a Shopify order, change its shipping address or offer a refund from the chat. Lyro Actions can check an order’s status or change an address, with one Action free
Zendesk
AI agents on every plan can connect to outside systems to read and write data and trigger actions
Deacon
None. It answers questions, and it declines any about the visitor’s own account, order or data

Working with a helpdesk

Tidio
A Zendesk integration on every plan, Free included, turns a chat into a Zendesk ticket with the customer’s details and messages. Its plan table lists Lyro Connect, which puts Lyro inside another helpdesk, on Plus and Premium
Zendesk
It’s the helpdesk, with more than 1,800 apps in its marketplace
Deacon
It isn’t one and connects to none. You reply from Deacon’s own dashboard

For startups

Tidio
No startup offer on its pricing page
Zendesk
Zendesk for Startups, the Suite free for 6 months, or up to 2 years through some funding partners
Deacon
The free plan, with every feature on it

Tidio’s prices come from tidio.com/pricing and Zendesk’s from zendesk.com/pricing, both read on 23 September 2026. Zendesk’s allowance in dollars is from its help centre, and the other pages used are listed at the end.

Choosing between Tidio and Zendesk

Pick Tidio if a few of you answer customers in one inbox and you’d like to start free. Live chat, ticketing, email, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram are all on the free plan, for up to 10 teammates. It suits an online shop too. There are plugins for Shopify, WordPress, Wix and other platforms, Lyro can learn your products from Shopify or WooCommerce, and from Growth your team can cancel a Shopify order, change its address or offer a refund without leaving the chat.

Pick Zendesk if support is a team with queues, service levels and a phone line. Suite Team brings messaging, live chat, social channels and voice into one place, and Suite Professional adds phone menus, callbacks, skills-based routing and community forums. You decide before a busy month whether the AI agent keeps answering past its allowance or hands the work to your agents. And if you qualify, Zendesk for Startups can make the first 6 months free.

Or run both. Tidio’s Zendesk integration works on every plan, Free included, and turns a chat into a Zendesk ticket with the customer’s details and messages. Lyro can import your Zendesk help centre, and Tidio says it can answer inside Zendesk too, through Lyro Connect, which its plan table lists on Plus and Premium. Then Tidio bills the AI, per Lyro conversation, and Zendesk bills your agents.

Either way, you’re buying tools for a team. If you answer support yourself, between building, a seat price or a shared inbox is the wrong shape of bill, and there’s a third option.

Deacon, for founders who answer support themselves

A helpdesk and a live chat inbox both assume someone is sitting in them. When that someone is you, the same questions keep pulling you away from the product. Deacon answers them on your site in seconds, day or night, from your own docs and in the language each customer writes in, with no flows or macros to set up first. When your docs don’t cover a question, it tells the visitor it doesn’t know rather than inventing an answer, and asks for their email. You’re emailed when they leave one or ask for a person, and your reply from Deacon’s dashboard lands in their chat if it’s still open. That’s human handoff without a queue to staff.

Each gap turns into an answer once. The questions your docs missed are listed with an Answer this button, and what you write becomes part of what Deacon knows. Save & check then asks Deacon the question again, shows you the reply it gives now and counts how many other open questions your answer covers. The more you answer, the less it needs you.

You also see what your customers need, not only what the loudest few send you. Every conversation is saved and searchable by what visitors asked. Topics group the questions, count the people behind each one and label most of them, as a bug report, a feature ask, a how-to and so on, so you know what to fix and what to build. That’s on every plan, the free one included, where Tidio lists AI insights with Premium and Zendesk’s intelligent triage starts on Suite Professional. The same script counts your visitors, where they came from and which goals they reach.

And what you pay never waits on a model’s verdict about whether a conversation was resolved, because Deacon counts its own replies. Every feature is on every plan, and the plans differ only in answers, knowledge, crawled pages and seats, with the seats included. Nothing is billed past a plan’s answers, no plan moves itself up, and there’s no badge to pay to remove. The free plan gives you 50 answers every month, needs no card and has no end date.

What people ask about Tidio and Zendesk

For people, Tidio, because its seats cost nothing up to 10 and every Zendesk agent pays for one. Past Tidio’s free plan, chat on your site costs $29 a month on Tidio’s Starter however many of you reply, against $69 an agent a month on Zendesk’s Suite Team, or $24.17 against $55 billed yearly. For volume, it depends. Starter covers only 100 conversations your team answers each month, and Lyro is a second bill, while Zendesk prices by the agent rather than the conversation and includes an AI allowance. Price your people and your volume on both before you choose.

No. Zendesk offers a 14-day trial of Suite Professional that needs no card, and then you choose a paid plan. New customers under 10 years old, with no more than a Series B and fewer than 50 employees, or up to 249 if a partner refers them, can apply to Zendesk for Startups for 6 months of the Suite free, or up to 2 years through some funding partners. Tidio’s free plan has no end date and covers 50 conversations a month on up to 10 seats, but its AI is free only for Lyro’s first 50 conversations.

Yes, in three ways. Lyro can import the articles from your Zendesk help centre to learn from. Tidio’s Zendesk integration, on every plan including Free, creates a Zendesk ticket from a Tidio chat with the customer’s name, email, phone number and messages attached. And Tidio says Lyro can reply to emails in Zendesk and turn chats into tickets there. Its pricing page offers Lyro on its own for exactly that, to add an AI agent to Zendesk, Salesforce or another helpdesk, though its plan table lists Lyro Connect, the helpdesk integration, only on Plus, from $300 a month, and Premium.

A Lyro conversation is counted when Lyro replies, whether or not the customer’s problem gets solved. Tidio’s pricing page says a customer who leaves and comes back is still one conversation, while its help centre says a thread closes after 15 minutes without a message and the next one counts again. A Zendesk resolution is counted only when the AI agent settles a request without a person. On the resolution tiers Zendesk introduced on 18 May 2026, a language model reads each finished conversation, and only a verified resolution uses the allowance. One the model can’t confirm as resolved doesn’t, even if the customer asked nothing more.

On Tidio, from Growth, with an add-on at $20 a month, or $16.67 a month billed yearly, and it’s included on Plus. On Zendesk, hiding the logo from the messaging widget needs Suite Enterprise, which the pricing page sells through sales. The older Web Widget (Classic) can hide it on any plan. Deacon shows no “powered by” line on any plan, the free one included.

Plenty, if you run a team or sell through a shop. Deacon is a chat widget for your own website, with no email inbox, phone line, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Instagram. It isn’t a helpdesk, so there are no tickets, queues or routing, and it takes no actions in other systems, so it won’t cancel an order or issue a refund. Tidio has the channels and Shopify order tools, and Zendesk adds voice, phone menus, skills-based routing and more than 1,800 apps. If your customers reach you on those channels, or a team shares the work, pick one of them.
