Freshdesk vs Intercom, an email helpdesk or a chat-first one

Freshdesk is Freshworks’ email-first helpdesk, priced per agent. Intercom is a helpdesk built around its Messenger chat, with Fin, its AI agent, on every plan. They bill their AI in different units. Freshdesk sells Freddy AI Agent sessions at $49 for each 100 once the first 500 are used, counted by time rather than by result. Intercom charges $0.99 for each Fin outcome and only when Fin gets a result. To have Freddy answer chat on your website you need Freshdesk Omni, from $29 an agent a month billed yearly, the price Intercom’s pricing FAQs give for an Essential seat, though its pricing page is testing $19. Next to them we’ve put Deacon, our AI customer support agent for founders who answer support themselves. Deacon has a free plan, and it needs no card.

Sessions against outcomes, and what each one counts

Freshdesk sells its AI in packs of 100 sessions

Growth, Pro and Enterprise each come with Freddy AI Agent and 500 sessions, given once per account rather than every month. After that a pack of 100 is $49 on any plan and any billing cycle, and it lasts as long as the cycle you pay on. Freshworks defines a session by time, not by result. It’s everything the AI says to one customer within 72 hours of their first email, or within 24 hours of the start of a chat, which only Freshdesk Omni has. Previewing an agent while you build it uses sessions too. When they’re gone, the AI stops answering and chats pass to your agents, except in the self-service widget, where it simply stops. With online billing, auto-recharge can add packs whenever fewer than 50 sessions are left.

Intercom charges $0.99 when Fin gets a result

Fin comes with Essential, Advanced and Expert, and each support outcome costs $0.99. Intercom counts one when the customer confirms their issue is resolved, when they don’t ask for more help after Fin’s reply, or when Fin completes a Procedure you built, including one that ends in a handoff. Its pricing FAQs say nothing is charged when the customer asks for a person, when Fin can’t answer and escalates, or when a Procedure fails. A conversation is charged once at most, and the charge is taken back if the customer returns to it for more help. A monthly outcome limit puts a ceiling on the bill.

We took these figures from Freshdesk’s pricing page, its Freddy AI add-ons article, its AI Agent Studio guide, Intercom’s Fin outcomes article and its pricing FAQs, all read on 12 October 2026.

What 100 AI chats a month cost one founder

Take one person on yearly billing, with the AI handling 100 chats a month on your website. On Freshdesk that means Omni Growth, $29 for the seat. The free 500 sessions cover the first five months, and after that a $49 pack each month brings it to $78. On Intercom it’s $29 for an Essential seat, or $19 on the lower price about half the loads of its page show, plus $0.99 for each chat that ends as an outcome. If 60 of the 100 do, the month comes to $88.40, or $78.40 on the lower seat price. The sums are ours.

With the seats level, the AI decides it. Freshdesk’s packs come to $0.49 a chat, whatever happens in it. Fin costs $0.99 for a chat it settles and nothing for one it doesn’t. If fewer than about half your chats end as outcomes, Intercom’s AI costs less, and if more do, Freshdesk’s does, once its free sessions are spent. On monthly billing the seats are $35 on Omni Growth and $39 on Essential, and neither AI price changes.

Getting an AI into your website’s chat

Intercom puts its Messenger on every plan, with live chat that’s free and unlimited, and Fin answers in it from the first seat you buy. Freshdesk on its own works from email and a customer portal. Freshworks’ help centre says the Email AI Agent is in Freshdesk and Freshdesk Omni, and the Chat AI Agent in Omni alone. So a team that wants Freddy chatting on its website is pricing Omni, at $29 an agent a month billed yearly, or $35 monthly, with the same 500 free sessions and $49 packs. Omni’s pricing page says its AI agents answer on chat and messaging apps in more than 60 languages.

Email runs the other way round. Freshdesk’s Growth plan, $19 an agent billed yearly, turns emails into tickets, has Freddy AI Agent replying to them and gives customers a portal with your knowledge base. Intercom includes support email on every plan as well, and replying to a customer’s email from its inbox costs nothing extra.

Freshdesk’s prices are from its Freshdesk and Freshdesk Omni pricing pages, where the monthly figures sit in each page’s own data. Intercom’s are from intercom.com/pricing, which we loaded 16 times, and its branding rule from its workspace settings article. We read them all in US dollars on 12 October 2026, and the rest of the pages we used are listed at the end. Freshdesk pricing and Intercom pricing each add up what a team of one to three pays.

Running Fin on Freshdesk, or the two side by side

You don’t have to give one up. Fin is also sold on its own for a helpdesk you already run, and Fin’s Freshdesk article prices it at $49 a month with 50 resolutions included, then $0.99 for each one after, with no seats to buy. Fin answers the email tickets assigned to it in Freshdesk, syncs its replies back to the ticket and hands off to your agent queue when it can’t help. On your website it chats through the Intercom Messenger, and can open a Freshdesk ticket as its handoff. Intercom’s pricing FAQs say a Freshdesk team can start a free Fin trial itself, without going through sales.

For 100 email tickets a month, by our sums, Freddy costs one $49 pack once the free sessions are gone. Fin costs $49 plus $0.99 for each resolution past 50, so up to $98.50 if it resolves all 100.

A team on Intercom’s helpdesk that keeps Freshdesk for tickets can join the two with Intercom’s Freshdesk app. You give it your Freshdesk domain and API key. It shows a customer’s recent Freshdesk tickets in Intercom’s inbox, turns an Intercom conversation into a Freshdesk ticket and looks up your Freshdesk solution articles. It can’t bring your Freshdesk ticket history across as Intercom conversations from the workspace settings.

Which of the two fits your team

Pick Freshdesk when most of your support comes in by email and you want it as tickets, with a portal where customers can look things up. Growth is $19 an agent a month billed yearly, and its Freddy AI Agent replies to email with 500 sessions to start. Two agents can use the Free Program for 6 months, though without AI sessions. Pro brings intelligent routing, custom dashboards and more than one SLA policy, and Omni puts chat and messaging in the same helpdesk when you want them.

Pick Intercom when customers mostly talk to you in chat, on your site or in your app, and you’d rather pay the AI for results than for time. Essential covers Fin, the Messenger, a shared inbox with tickets, pre-built reports and a public help centre. Advanced brings several team inboxes, round robin assignment and the Workflows automation builder, and lets you take Intercom’s branding off. A startup with up to $10M raised and fewer than 15 employees can join Early Stage, at $65 a month in its first year for six Advanced seats and 300 Fin outcomes a month.

When you’re the whole support team, there’s Deacon

Freshdesk and Intercom are built for a team sharing a queue. If the queue is you, Deacon starts from a different place. Its chat widget goes on your website with one script tag and answers on every plan, the free one included, so there’s no Omni to add for chat and no seat to buy before the AI says a word. It answers from your website, PDFs, Word files and any text you paste in, within seconds, at any hour and in the language each visitor writes in.

There’s no helpdesk to pick, either. Deacon answers in your website’s chat, has no shared inbox, and turns nothing into a ticket, in Freshdesk, Intercom or anywhere else. When a question goes past your docs, it tells the visitor it doesn’t know and offers a field for their email address. Leaving one, or asking for a person, puts the conversation in front of you in Deacon’s dashboard, and if nobody on the team has it open, the owners hear about it by email a few minutes on. You answer from the dashboard. A visitor who still has the chat open sees your words arrive there with your name on them. One who has gone gets your reply by email, as long as they gave their address in that conversation. That’s human handoff, so a visitor who left still hears back, with no support inbox for you to watch.

Deacon also gives you a read on what customers keep asking. Topics sort their questions into groups, show how many people asked each, and tag a group as a bug report, a feature ask, a how-to or another type when that type outnumbers the rest. Intercom sells Topics Explorer and Trends in its Pro add-on, from $100 a month. Deacon’s Topics are on every plan, the free one too. A topic often points at a gap in your docs, and every question your docs didn’t cover has an Answer this button beside it. Write the answer once and it becomes part of what Deacon knows for the next visitor. Save & check puts the question to Deacon again, so you see its new reply for yourself.

The bill stays simple too. Deacon doesn’t count sessions or outcomes. It counts answers, one for each reply it writes on your live site, and a conversation uses about two. So the 100 chats in the month above would take about 200 of the 1,000 answers on Starter. Every plan runs on the same model, chats in the Playground are never counted, and a plan that reaches its answers stops there, without billing more or upgrading itself. No plan carries a “powered by” line, where Intercom’s branding comes off only on Advanced and Expert.

Freshdesk and Intercom, what buyers want to know

For an email seat, yes, or level when Intercom’s page shows its $19 test price. Freshdesk Growth is $19 an agent a month billed yearly, against $29 for Intercom’s Essential, or $19 on about half the loads of Intercom’s page. For an AI in your website’s chat, both seats are $29 billed yearly, because Freshdesk keeps its chat AI for Omni. The AI then settles it. Freddy costs $49 for each 100 sessions once the free 500 are spent, and Fin $0.99 for each outcome, so Fin works out cheaper when fewer than about half of your chats end as outcomes. That sum is ours.

Freshdesk has the Free Program, free for 6 months for up to 2 agents. It’s for Freshdesk only, not Freshdesk Omni, and Freshworks’ AI Agent Studio guide gives it no free AI sessions. Intercom has none. Its pricing FAQs say so plainly, and point you to a 14-day trial with no card, or to its Early Stage programme if you’re a young startup.

Yes. Fin is sold on its own for Freshdesk, at $49 a month with 50 resolutions, then $0.99 each, with no seats. It answers the email tickets assigned to it and hands off to your agent queue, and you can start the trial yourself. Your team keeps working in Freshdesk. Fin AI pricing works out what Fin costs on Freshdesk and other helpdesks.

No. Deacon has no integrations and no webhooks, so it never creates a Freshdesk ticket or an Intercom conversation. Its conversations, and any email address a visitor leaves, stay in Deacon’s own dashboard. It can sit on a site that also runs one of them, but switch the other chat off on those pages, so visitors aren’t offered two chat buttons.

When several people share the replies, or a lot of your support arrives by email. Both give a team tickets, a shared inbox and an email channel, and both reach WhatsApp, Freshdesk through Omni and Intercom by use, and Fin can run Procedures you build. Deacon answers in one place, the chat on your website. It has no tickets, no support inbox for email, no phone, WhatsApp or SMS, and no integrations, and it always declines a question about a visitor’s own account.
