Help Scout vs Intercom, an email inbox or a chat-first helpdesk

Help Scout is a shared email inbox for a small team, with Docs for your help articles, Beacon for your site and a free plan for up to 5 users. Intercom is a helpdesk with its Messenger chat and Fin, its AI agent, built in. Both charge for each person who answers and bill the AI by results, at $0.75 a resolution on Help Scout and $0.99 an outcome on Intercom. The third column is Deacon, an AI customer support agent for founders who answer support themselves. It has a free plan, and it needs no card.

How Help Scout and Intercom bill for the AI

Help Scout charges for each AI resolution

AI Answers, the AI agent Help Scout’s Agent page now calls Compass, answers in Beacon from your Docs and the websites and files you add. It counts a resolution when it gave an answer and the customer didn’t ask for more help after it, once per chat however many questions it answered. Nothing is charged when it only greets the customer or asks a follow-up question, or when the customer asks for more help. No plan includes any resolutions. A new account gets 3 months of them free, counted from the day it signs up, and after that each one is $0.75, billed the month after. You can set a monthly spending cap, and at the cap AI Answers switches off until the next cycle.

Intercom charges for each Fin outcome

Fin, Intercom’s AI agent, is on every plan with no outcomes included, and each one is $0.99. An outcome counts when a customer confirms their issue is resolved, when they don’t ask for more help after Fin responds, or when Fin completes a Procedure you set up, handoffs included. Intercom charges at most one per conversation, however many questions Fin answers, and refunds it if the conversation is reopened. Nothing is charged when Fin can’t answer or fails an action, or when the customer asks for a person. Spending limits and alerts keep the bill in check.

The figures in these cards are from helpscout.com/pricing, Help Scout’s AI pricing article and intercom.com/pricing, read on 25 September 2026.

The seats underneath are close. Help Scout’s Standard is $25 a user a month billed yearly, or $30 monthly. Intercom’s Essential is $19 or $29 a seat a month billed yearly, and $29 or $39 monthly. Intercom is testing two prices, and our fetches of its page on 25 September 2026 were served both. Its structured data and help centre still quote the higher one, $39 a month.

Take one person, billed yearly, and 100 conversations a month settled by the AI. On Help Scout Standard that’s $25 for the seat and $75 in resolutions, $100 a month once the free 3 months are over. On Intercom Essential it’s $19 or $29 for the seat and $99 in outcomes, $118 or $128 a month. The sums are ours. On both, the AI line soon outgrows the seat, and it keeps growing as the AI settles more.

Help Scout’s prices come from helpscout.com/pricing and Intercom’s from intercom.com/pricing, both read on 25 September 2026. Intercom’s monthly prices sit behind its billing switch and in the page’s own data, and the other pages used are listed at the end.

Which of the two suits your support team

Help Scout suits you if most of your customers write in by email and a few of you share the address. The team works conversations together in one shared inbox, Docs holds your help articles, and Beacon puts those articles, a contact form and live chat on your site. The free plan runs a team of up to 5 while you help up to 100 people a month. AI Assist comes with every paid seat, and AI Drafts and AI Summarize with Plus and Pro, where Intercom sells Copilot on top. And its AI agent costs less per result than Fin.

Intercom suits you if your customers reach you in chat, on your site or in your app, and you want Fin to take most of it. Essential sells itself to individuals, startups and small businesses, with the Messenger, a shared inbox, a ticketing system and a public help centre. Advanced adds the Workflows builder, team inboxes and round robin assignment, and Proactive Support Plus, from $99 a month, adds product tours, surveys and checklists. If you’ve raised up to $10M, have fewer than 15 employees and are new to Intercom, Early Stage makes the first year of Advanced $33 a month for 2 seats, with 300 Fin outcomes a month.

Both are helpdesks for a team, priced by the person. If you’re a founder answering support between building, you may not need one at all, and there’s a third option.

Deacon, for a founder who doesn’t need a shared inbox

A helpdesk shares the work between people. When the people are just you, the job is to stop answering the same questions. Deacon answers them on your site in seconds, day or night, from your own docs and in the language each customer writes in, with no flows or Procedures to set up first. When your docs don’t cover a question, it tells the visitor it doesn’t know rather than guessing, and asks for their email. You’re emailed when they leave one or ask for a person, and your reply from Deacon’s dashboard lands in their chat while it’s open, under your first name and your company’s. That’s human handoff with no inbox to watch.

Every gap gets answered once. Questions your docs missed wait in Conversations with an Answer this button, and what you write becomes part of what Deacon knows. Save & check asks Deacon the question again, shows the reply it gives now and counts how many other open questions your answer covers, so the more you answer, the less Deacon needs you.

You also see what customers need. Every conversation is saved and searchable by what visitors asked, and Topics group the questions, count the people asking and label most of them as a feature ask, a bug report, a how-to and so on. That’s on every plan, the free one included, and the same script counts your visitors, where they came from and which goals they reach.

What you pay never depends on anyone judging whether a conversation was resolved, because Deacon counts its own replies. There’s no seat to buy for each person, every feature is on every plan, nothing is billed past a plan’s answers and no plan upgrades itself. No plan shows a “powered by” line, and the free plan needs no card, has no end date and deletes nothing for inactivity.

What buyers ask about Help Scout and Intercom

On the AI, yes, and on the seat it depends. Help Scout’s Standard is $25 a user a month billed yearly, or $30 monthly, and each AI resolution is $0.75. Intercom’s Essential is $19 or $29 a seat a month billed yearly, and $29 or $39 monthly, depending on which version of the page you see, and each Fin outcome is $0.99. Help Scout also has a free plan for up to 5 users. For a young startup, both have an offer. Intercom’s Early Stage is $33 a month in year one for 2 Advanced seats with 300 Fin outcomes a month included, and Help Scout for Startups gives 6 months of Plus and AI Answers free.

Help Scout does. Its free plan covers up to 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site of up to 10 articles, and helps up to 100 contacts a month, but it has no live chat, and AI Answers is only there for your first 3 months. Intercom has none. Its 14-day trial needs no card and includes Fin and every add-on, and you pay once you choose a plan.

Both count the customer who goes quiet after the AI’s answer, and both charge once per conversation. The difference is what else counts. Fin also bills a Procedure it completes, handoffs included, so a Procedure that ends by passing the customer to your team can still be an outcome. Help Scout charges only when AI Answers gave an answer, and nothing when it only greets the customer or asks a follow-up question, or when the customer asks for more help. Intercom refunds an outcome if the conversation is reopened.

Not all of it yet. Fin answers across Intercom’s channels and can complete Procedures you set up, and it can run on another helpdesk, such as Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshdesk, at $0.99 an outcome with a monthly minimum. Help Scout’s Agent page offers its AI on your website and in your app, and lists answering email, and connecting apps such as payment processors and CRMs, as coming soon.

Salesforce. Intercom’s company renamed itself Fin on 12 May 2026, after its AI agent, and Salesforce completed buying Fin on 10 September 2026. The helpdesk is still sold as Intercom, at the prices on this page.

A lot, if a team shares your support. Deacon is a chat widget for your own website, with no email inbox, phone line, SMS, WhatsApp or social channels. It isn’t a helpdesk, so there are no tickets, queues or routing, and it has no help centre of its own. It never starts a conversation, so there are no product tours or outbound messages, and it takes no actions in other systems. If your customers email you, or two or more of you answer them, choose Help Scout or Intercom.
