Help Scout vs Zendesk, a shared inbox or a ticketing suite

Help Scout is a shared inbox for a small team, with Docs for your help articles and Beacon for your site, and a free plan for up to 5 users. Zendesk is a full ticketing suite that grows into phone, routing and many help centres. Both charge for each person who answers, and both bill their AI agent per resolution, at $0.75 on Help Scout and $2.00 past an allowance on Zendesk. The third column is Deacon, an AI customer support agent for founders who answer support themselves. It has a free plan, and it needs no card.

How Help Scout and Zendesk bill for the AI

Help Scout charges for each AI resolution

AI Answers, the AI agent Help Scout’s Agent page now calls Compass, answers in Beacon from your Docs and the websites and files you add. It counts a resolution when it gave an answer and the customer didn’t ask for more help after it, once per chat however many questions it answered. Nothing is charged when it only greets the customer or asks a follow-up question, or when the customer asks for more help. No plan includes any resolutions. A new account gets 3 months of them free, counted from the day it signs up, and after that each one is $0.75, billed the month after. You can set a monthly spending cap, and at the cap AI Answers switches off until the next cycle.

Zendesk includes an allowance, then charges per resolution

Zendesk’s AI agents come with every Support and Suite plan. Its pricing page includes 5 automated resolutions an agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Growth and Suite Professional and 15 on Suite Enterprise, up to 10,000 a year. An automated resolution is a request the AI agent resolved without passing it to a person. Past the allowance, each one is $2.00 pay as you go, or $1.50 if you commit to a number in advance. Its help centre says overage is allowed by default, so the AI agent keeps answering and the extra is billed monthly. Choose not to allow overage and the AI agent pauses at the limit, sending more requests to your agents.

The figures in these cards are from helpscout.com/pricing, Help Scout’s AI pricing article, zendesk.com/pricing and Zendesk’s help centre, read on 25 September 2026. For accounts on Zendesk’s resolution allowance pricing model, that help centre article holds the allowance in dollars instead, $2 an agent seat a month on Suite Team and the Support plans, $5 on Suite Growth and Suite Professional and $10 on Suite Enterprise.

Seats come first on both bills. Help Scout’s Standard is $25 a user a month billed yearly, or $30 monthly, and it includes live chat. Zendesk’s Support Team is $19 an agent a month billed yearly, or $25 monthly, for email and tickets, and live chat and a help centre start on Suite Team, at $55 billed yearly or $69 monthly. So for chat on your site with an AI agent answering, the seats to compare are Help Scout’s Standard and Zendesk’s Suite Team.

Take two people, billed yearly, and 100 conversations a month settled by the AI. On Help Scout Standard that’s $50 in seats and $75 in resolutions, $125 a month once the free 3 months are over. On Zendesk Suite Team it’s $110 in seats, with 10 resolutions included and 90 more at $2.00, $290 a month. The sums are ours, and both AI bills grow as the AI settles more.

Help Scout’s prices come from helpscout.com/pricing and Zendesk’s from zendesk.com/pricing, both read on 25 September 2026. Zendesk’s monthly prices and its Suite Growth price are in the table that opens from Compare all plan features, and the other pages used are listed at the end.

Which of the two suits your support team

Help Scout suits you if your support starts in email and a few of you share the address. The team works customer conversations together in one shared inbox, Docs holds your help articles, and Beacon puts those articles, a contact form and live chat on your site. The free plan runs a team of up to 5 while you help up to 100 people a month, and Help Scout pitches Standard at teams moving beyond email. AI Assist comes with every paid seat, and AI Drafts and AI Summarize with Plus and Pro, so the AI for your own team isn’t a separate bill. If you’re new to Help Scout and an incorporated tech startup under 2 years old with under $1 million in recurring revenue, Help Scout for Startups gives you 6 months of Plus free.

Zendesk suits you if support already runs as a team with a queue. Zendesk pitches its cheapest plan at teams that have outgrown a shared inbox. Suite Team brings messaging, live chat, social channels and voice into one ticketing system. Suite Growth adds a customer portal and up to 5 help centres, and Suite Professional IVR phone trees and skills-based routing. Its AI agents answer by email on every plan and can take actions in your other systems, and its marketplace lists more than 1,800 apps, partners and integrations. Zendesk for Startups can make the Suite free for 6 months, or up to 2 years through a partner.

Both are tools for a team, priced by the person. If you’re a founder answering support between building, you may not need a shared inbox at all, and there’s a third option.

Deacon, for a founder who doesn’t need a shared inbox

A shared inbox stops two people replying to the same customer. When support is just you, what you need is for the same questions to stop reaching you. Deacon answers them on your site in seconds, at any hour, from your own docs and in each customer’s language, with no flows to build first. When your docs don’t cover a question, it says it doesn’t know instead of inventing an answer, and asks for the visitor’s email. You get an email when they leave one or ask for a person, and you reply from Deacon’s dashboard, straight into their chat while it’s open, under your first name and your company’s. That’s human handoff without an inbox to staff.

Each answer you write makes it better. A question your docs missed gets an Answer this button, and what you write becomes part of what Deacon knows, so it can answer the next person who asks. Save & check then asks Deacon the question again, shows you what it now says and tells you how many other open questions your answer covers.

You also see what customers are stuck on and what they want next, from everyone who asks rather than the loudest few. Every conversation is saved and searchable by what visitors asked. Topics group the questions, count the people behind each one and label most of them, as a bug report, a feature ask, a how-to and so on. That’s on every plan, the free one included, and the script behind the widget also runs your website analytics, with visitors, sources, goals and funnels.

And the AI isn’t a second bill. Deacon counts its own replies, so what you pay never waits on a judgement of whether a conversation was resolved. Every feature is on every plan, nothing is billed past a plan’s answers, no plan upgrades itself and none shows a “powered by” line. The free plan needs no card, has no end date and deletes nothing for inactivity.

What buyers ask about Help Scout and Zendesk

For chat and an AI agent on your site, yes, on both the seat and the AI. Help Scout’s Standard is $25 a user a month billed yearly, or $30 monthly, with live chat included, and each AI resolution is $0.75. Zendesk’s chat starts on Suite Team, at $55 an agent billed yearly or $69 monthly, and each resolution past the allowance is $2.00 pay as you go. For email and tickets alone, Zendesk’s Support Team, at $19 an agent billed yearly or $25 monthly, has the lower seat. Help Scout also has a free plan, and Zendesk doesn’t.

Help Scout does. Its free plan covers up to 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site of up to 10 articles, and helps up to 100 contacts a month. Once you reach 100, you can’t reply until the next month or until you upgrade, though customers’ emails still arrive. Zendesk has none. It gives you 14 days of Suite Professional with no card, and Zendesk for Startups makes it free for 6 months, or up to 2 years through a partner, if you qualify. Help Scout for Startups gives 6 months of Plus and AI Answers free.

Not all of it yet. Help Scout’s Agent page offers its AI on your website and in your app, and lists answering email, and connecting apps such as payment processors and CRMs, as coming soon. Zendesk’s pricing page lists AI agents for email on every plan and for messaging from Suite Team, with integrations and actions on every plan, and its AI agents can answer calls once you have Zendesk’s voice product. If you want the AI to take actions in your other systems, Zendesk offers that today.

Per user, on the plans Help Scout sells today, from Standard to Pro. Its help centre keeps a separate guide for accounts on contact-based plans, billed by how many people they help each month, but the pricing page sells only plans priced per user. The free plan is the one current plan with a contact limit, 100 a month, where a contact is someone your team replied to or AI Answers resolved, counted once however many conversations they start.

A lot, if a team shares your support. Deacon is a chat widget for your own website, with no email inbox, phone line, SMS, WhatsApp or social channels. It isn’t a helpdesk, so there are no tickets, queues, routing or service levels, and it has no help centre of its own. It takes no actions in other systems, such as a refund, and always declines questions about a visitor’s own account. If your customers email you, or two or more of you answer them, choose Help Scout or Zendesk.
