Tidio vs Crisp for a small support team
Tidio charges for the conversations your team answers, gives up to 10 people a free inbox and sells its AI agent, Lyro, as a separate package. Crisp charges one flat price for the whole workspace, with unlimited conversations and its AI agent, Hugo, paid for in credits that come with every paid plan. Here are both price lists, what each AI costs, what the free plans leave out and what happens when you run out. The third column is Deacon, an AI customer support agent for founders who answer support themselves. It has a free plan, and it needs no card.

What Tidio and Crisp charge for
Tidio counts billable conversations, the ones someone on your team replies to. A thread counts once however long it runs, and a message nobody answers doesn’t count. The free plan covers 50 a month, and Starter, at $29 a month or $24.17 a month billed yearly, covers 100. Seats cost nothing, up to 10 on every self-serve plan. The AI is a second purchase. Every account gets 50 Lyro conversations once, and after that Lyro needs a monthly package, from $39 a month, or $32.50 a month billed yearly, for 50. A Lyro conversation is any chat Lyro replies in at least once.
Crisp charges for the workspace, whatever the number of conversations. Its plans are $45, $95 and $295 a month for 4, 10 and 20 seats, and each includes a month of Hugo credits, worth $5, $25 and $75. Hugo draws on them by the token, so every extra reply in a conversation costs a little more. Crisp’s billing article puts a full Hugo conversation at around $0.05 to $0.10, and the credits reset on the 4th of each month without rolling over. There’s no yearly price to compare. You switch to yearly billing in the app once you’ve subscribed, and the year is paid in advance.
So Tidio’s bill follows how many conversations people answer, with the AI bought on top, and Crisp’s follows the plan you pick, with the AI’s allowance growing with it. For a small team that wants the AI answering, the entry points are close. Tidio’s free plan plus the smallest Lyro package is $39 a month for 50 AI conversations. Crisp’s Mini is $45 a month for 4 seats and around 90 AI conversations, by Crisp’s estimate.
Tidio, Crisp and Deacon, row by row
| Feature | Tidio | Crisp | Deacon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free plan | 50 billable conversations a month on up to 10 seats, with live chat, ticketing, email, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. Lyro’s 50 free conversations come once, for the life of the account | 2 seats, the chat widget, a shared inbox and a contact form, with no AI credits. Changing the widget’s colours, text and position waits for Mini | 50 answers every month on one seat, with every feature and no card. It has no end date and deletes nothing for inactivity |
| Cheapest paid plan | Starter, $29 a month, or $24.17 a month billed yearly, for 100 billable conversations | Mini, $45 a month for the whole workspace, with 4 seats and $5 of AI credits. No yearly price is published | Starter, $50 a month, or $40 a month billed yearly, for 1,000 answers on three seats |
| What you’re billed for | Conversations your team replies to, counted once per thread. Lyro’s conversations run on a meter of their own | The workspace, with unlimited conversations. Hugo spends its credits by the token, around $0.05 to $0.10 a conversation by Crisp’s estimate | Each reply Deacon writes on your live site. Chats in the Playground and on localhost never count |
| The AI agent | Lyro, sold as an add-on or on its own, from $39 a month, or $32.50 a month billed yearly, for 50 conversations | Hugo, included from Mini with $5, $25 or $75 of credits a month, which Crisp puts at around 90, 450 or 1,350 conversations | Deacon itself, on every plan. The answers are what you pay for |
| When you reach a limit | At the conversation limit, your team can’t reply to new messages or see their details until the quota resets. A spent free Lyro quota never resets | Conversations never run out. When Hugo’s credits do, it stops answering and new conversations go to your team until they reset on the 4th, unless Pay-As-You-Go is on | When a month’s answers run out, visitors get a short reply saying Deacon can’t look into that one right now, and are asked for their email unless they’ve already left it in that conversation. You can still read and answer every conversation |
| Paying past the limit | On a new account’s paid monthly plan below Plus, the package moves up a level at 95% of the quota, unless you switch that off | Only if you switch on Pay-As-You-Go, which lets you set a billing limit. Crisp doesn’t publish its rate | Never. No plan bills past its answers, and none upgrades itself |
| Removing their branding | Not on Free or Starter. An add-on on Growth, at $20 a month, or $16.67 a month billed yearly, and included on Plus | Plus only, at $295 a month, and not during a trial | No plan shows a “powered by” line, so there’s no badge to pay to remove |
| Handing a chat to a person | Lyro transfers the conversation to your inbox by default, offering “Talk to a person” while you’re online. Offline, you can have it create a ticket instead | Hugo moves the conversation to your main inbox when it can’t answer confidently or a rule tells it to. Routing rules and round-robin assignment start on Essentials | Deacon says when it doesn’t know and asks for the visitor’s email. You get an email when they leave one or ask for a person, and your reply from the dashboard appears in their chat if it’s still open |
| Seeing what customers ask | Basic analytics on every plan and advanced analytics from Growth. AI insights are listed with Premium, which is priced through sales | Prebuilt analytics, data export and AI auto-tagging start on Essentials. Hugo Topics sort conversations into themes you name and describe yourself | Every conversation, searchable by what visitors asked, and Topics that group questions by themselves, count who asked and label most of them, on every plan. Website analytics come from the same script |
| What the AI learns from | Website pages, up to 60 on a priority scan, Q&A pairs, a CSV or PDF, Zendesk articles and Shopify or WooCommerce products | A crawl of your site, Crisp help centre articles, TXT, CSV or PDF files and Q&A snippets. Mini takes 1 domain and 1 file, Essentials 3 domains and 5 files | A crawl of your website or single pages, files (PDF, Word, Markdown, text, CSV or HTML), pasted text and the answers you write |
| Channels | Live chat, email, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram, on every plan, Free included | The chat widget and a contact form on Free. Email, Messenger, Telegram and X from Mini, and WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, phone, Viber and Line from Essentials | The chat widget on your own website |
| Getting it on your site | A plugin from your platform’s app market, or one line of code above the closing body tag | The chatbox script in your page’s head, or before the closing body tag, or a plugin for WordPress or Shopify | One script tag before the closing body tag. Or give your coding agent the install prompt, and it adds the tag and checks it’s live |
| Seats | Up to 10 on every self-serve plan, at no charge | 2 on Free, 4 on Mini, 10 on Essentials and 20 on Plus, where more are $10 a month each | one seat on Free, three seats on Starter |
| Trials and startup offers | A 7-day trial of every feature with no card, then back to Free. No startup offer on its pricing page | A 14-day trial of every feature with no card. 30% off Essentials or Plus if you’re new to Crisp, have raised under $1M and are under 3 years old | The free plan, with every feature on it |

Choosing between Tidio and Crisp
Pick Tidio if you want the most on a free plan, or you sell online. Up to 10 teammates share one inbox for live chat, ticketing, email, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram without paying anything, and the 7-day trial of the paid features needs no card. There are plugins for Shopify, WordPress, WooCommerce and Wix, Lyro can learn your products from Shopify or WooCommerce, and from Growth your team can cancel a Shopify order, change its shipping address or offer a refund from the chat window. The bill moves when your team answers more, or when you add Lyro.
Pick Crisp if a few of you share an inbox and want a bill that doesn’t move with your volume. Conversations are unlimited on every plan, Hugo comes inside the plan from Mini, and Crisp hosts your data on European servers on every plan, the free one included. From Essentials you get WhatsApp, Instagram and the phone in the same inbox, and a help centre Hugo learns from as you write it. Hugo can also reach into your own systems through an MCP server, to look up an order or issue a refund within rules you set. A young startup that qualifies gets 30% off Essentials or Plus.
Both are built around a team working an inbox. Tidio counts the conversations your team answers, and Crisp prices the workspace your team sits in. If you handle support yourself, between building, neither was shaped around you, and there’s a third option.
Where Deacon fits if you answer support yourself
When you’re the whole support team, the same questions pull you off the product every day. Deacon answers them in seconds, at any hour, from your own docs and in the language your customer writes in, with no flows to build first. When your docs don’t cover a question, it says it doesn’t know rather than make something up, and asks for the visitor’s email. You get an email when they leave one or ask for a person, and your reply from Deacon’s dashboard appears in their chat if it’s still open. There’s no inbox to staff.
Then you answer each new question once. Crisp’s help centre says Hugo doesn’t learn from past conversations, and asks you to turn recurring questions into Q&A snippets yourself. Deacon brings those questions to you. One your docs didn’t cover gets an Answer this button, and what you write becomes part of what Deacon knows, so it can answer the next person who asks. Save & check asks Deacon the question again, shows you the reply it now gives and tells you how many other open questions your answer covers. The more you answer, the less Deacon needs you.
You also see what customers need, not just what the loudest few email about. Every conversation is saved and searchable by what visitors asked. Hugo’s Topics sort conversations into themes you name and describe in advance. Deacon’s Topics form on their own from what people ask, count how many asked and label most of them as a feature ask, a bug report, a how-to and so on, so you find out what to fix and what to build next, including the things you didn’t think to look for. That’s on every plan, free included, and the same script counts your visitors, where they came from and which goals they reach.
The price stays plain, too. Every feature is on every plan, and the plans differ only in answers, knowledge, crawled pages and seats. The free plan gives you 50 answers every month, where Lyro’s free 50 come once and Crisp’s free plan has no AI. Every plan answers with the same model, nothing is billed past a plan’s answers, and no plan moves itself up a level. There’s no badge to pay to remove, and the free plan needs no card, has no end date and deletes nothing for inactivity.
